On Oct. 19, 1998, Bowater Pulp and Paper Canada Inc. announced it would close its pulp mill in Gold River permanently, effective Feb. 16. The pulp mill was Gold River's primary employer, directly employing over one-third of the community's workforce and was responsible for 82 per cent of the municipal tax base.
